Reserve Spot for Hu Xiaoyuan at Tai Kwun Conversations:Venus's Flower Basket and Date Palm

2025. 02. 20-2025. 02. 20

“Art has long been regarded as an attempt to conquer time and to transcend the present through an expression of ‘immortality.’ With the development of contemporary art—from readymades and chance-based practices to various forms of performance—the modes of artistic expression, or the ‘materials’ chosen by artists, have undergone continual transformation. Beyond formal shifts, organic and biological substances have increasingly entered artistic practice as materials. These materials, prone to decay and decomposition, form a new relationship with art’s pursuit of ‘immortality’—a relationship that appears contradictory, yet jointly reveals the meaning of ‘existence.’

The latest edition of Tai Kwun Conversations will feature Hu Xiaoyuan, whose recent solo exhibition A Different Pathexplores biological materials and processes of transformation, alongside Hong Kong–based artist Zheng Bo, who will share his plant-centered, plant-mediated practices developed across different regions of the world. Drawing its theme from two biological materials referenced by the artists—the paired shells of shipworms (xielaotongxue) and the date palm—the conversation will examine the relationship between organic materials and consciousness of life in art.”
