Beijing Commune will be presenting HU XIAOYUAN's No Fruit at the Root in the Statements sector of ART BASEL, Basel, Swiss 2013.

No Fruit at the Root by HU XIAOYUAN will be shown at “Art Statement” , ART BASEL in Basel


Beijing Commune is proud to announce our participation in the “Art Statement” of Art Basel, Basel, running from June 10th through 16th, 2013. Located at Booth S5(Hall 1), we will present the work No Fruit at the Root by Beijing-based artist Hu Xiaoyuan. Hu Xiaoyuan’s art has always been questioning the inter-changing of the contrasting concepts, such as love and hurt, life and death, existence and absence, useful and useless, etc. One of her most known work A Keepsake I Cannot Give Away(exhibited in Documenta12), in which the artist made a series of hair embroideries about traditional love tokens and parts of her own body on the type of white silk traditionally used for suicide or on funerals, was a typical example of her early exploration into such paradoxical concepts.


Keep focusing on this exploration, Hu’s art becomes increasingly detached and abstract in form. Starting from 2008, Hu has been practicing with a new series of works, made with silk and wood. She obtains dierent types and forms of wood pieces which are of diverse functions or serving for various purposes(such as bed or chopping board), and cover them with Xiao, a strong, exible and semi-transparent silk. She traces the original wood patterns beneath the silk and then takes o the silk after nishing the painting, so that she can continue to paint the wood pieces white. The painted silk will be “re-framed” onto the wood with nails after the white paint on the wood dries. In this way, the “real” is replaced by its imitation. And also, in this laborious process, the original functions of wood are gradually eliminated, while its quality of being aesthetic object emerges and is nally established. The Wood on show at the second New Museum Triennial “The Ungovernables” in 2012 is a good illustration of her practice with wood.


Titled as No Fruit at the Root, this new series that Hu Xiaoyuan is going to present for Art Statement carry her experiment with wood even further. All the wood pieces in this work are collected by the artist from the thrown-away of the carpenters. The viewers can hardly identify the original functions of these pieces or from what they were taken o. They can only see these elegantly made pieces, with disturbing forms, scattering around, revealing no information about the “real” that lie beneath.


Hu Xiaoyuan was born in 1977 and graduated from China Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2002. As a member of the young artist collective N12, Hu X

iaoyuan started her practice in contemporary in the college years as has become a leading gure of the emerging generation in China's art scene. Hu Xiaoyuan primarily works with installation and video, and her works has been exhibited extensively in museums across the world.


Besides her two solo exhibitions at Beijing Commune, Hu Xiaoyuan was also included in the "Potent Force: Duan Jianyu Hu Xiaoyuan” (Shanghai Rockbund Art Museum, Shanghai, 2013), “The Ungovernables - New Museum Triennial", (New Museum, New York, 2012), "Moving Image in China 1988-2011", (Minsheng Art Museum, Shanghai, 2011), "Media Landscape - Zone East", Contemporary Urban Centre Liverpool Biennial, (Korean Cultural Centre, Liverpool, 2010), "Ego Documents", The Autobiographical in Contemporary Art, (Kunstmuseum Bern, Bern, Switzerland,2008) and “Documenta12”,(Kassel, Germany, 2007), among many others.
