Beijing Commune was founded in 2004. It's a professional art gallery which attends to exhibit and promote Chinese contemporary art. It is an active space where various works of both established and emerging Chinese contemporary artists are exhibited, including painting, drawing, sculpture, video and photography, etc. It focuses on discovering and promoting the new power, introducing the special value of Chinese contemporary art to the international arena, and creating new ideas of exhibiting and marketing. The gallery also organizes academic conferences as well as publishing books on Chinese contemporary art.
Since its founding, Beijing Commune has held a series of programs that have received extensive attentions from the international art scene. "Sublimation: A New Art Project by Zhang Dali" (2005), one of the gallery's initial exhibitions, was later selected to attend the 6th Gwangju Biennale. In 2009, Song Dong, artist presented by Beijing Commune, had his solo project at MoMA, New York. In February 2010, Yin Xiuzhen,with her Collective Subconsious which was first shown at Beijing Commune in 2007, became the second Chinese artist invited by MoMA's "Projects" to have solo show. And Liu Jianhua, with his Container series which had their debut at Beijing Commune in 2009, participated in the 17th Biennale of Sydney in 2010.
